When is this Virtual network adapter is needed? And the what is this Virtual network adapter use for?

You can use virtual network adapter if you want to make full network redirection between peers.
When you connect peers using virtual network adapter you don't need to forward (tunnel) ports because they are already accessible.
This is much same as when you want to connect to some other machine inside your local network.
